Sophia Chorny

Sophia Chorny, a skilled draughtsman and painter, was born in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in 1970. As a young artist in 1988, she earned a spot in the prestigious P.P Benkov Art Institue due to her early proficiency in drawing and painting the figure. She was a talented pupil at the Institute, and spent three years vigorously learning the skills necessary for a career as an artist. During her time at the Institute, Sophia was to meet her future husband and fellow artist Timur Tsaku; the couple moved to Israel in 1991, shortly after their marriage. Although one of the most talented and promising young artists as a student, it would be 14 years before Sophia again touched a pencil or paintbrush.  
 
While raising her young family in Tel Aviv, Sophia worked as a fashion designer and computer programmer.  Possibly inspired by Timur’s black and white painting technique, she took up her initial love of painting once more, finding her own identity with romantic black and white images of women. This initial body of figurative works has all been sold to private collections.

For Sophia, painting is like “giving birth.” Each work is like “giving life” to the moment and emotions she has tried to capture in her paintings. Choosing to work solely with black paint, she feels that black is the most “colorful” way to depict her models. The women who appear in her paintings are selected by their ability to convey emotion and each has a timeless, universal quality to them. These images transcend portraiture and become “everywoman.”
